Day 1 - Day 1: San Juan del Sur – Island of Ometepe - San Juan del Sur

We drive from San Juan del Sur to San Jorge where we take the ferry to the island of Ometepe in the vast Lake Nicaragua. There we undertake a discovery tour over the island with its two volcanoes. Our bus takes us to the legendary place Charco Verde, a green lagoon where we will get to know the local flora and fauna. Another highlight of the island is the pre-Columbian stone figures and petroglyphs of Alta Gracia, which we will visit. At Playa Santa Domingo we have a lunch and if you want, you can have a swim in Lake Nicaragua. After an exciting day on the island of Ometepe, we return to San Juan del Sur late in the afternoon. During the time of the arrival of the sea turtles and in good weather an optional turtle tour can be undertaken in the evening.

Day 2 - Day 2: San Juan del Sur – Catarina & San Juan de Oriente - Finca San Pedro – León

Immediately after breakfast we drive on the Panamericana to the so-called Pueblos Blancos with a detour to the viewpoint of Catarina, which offers a wonderful view of the Laguna de Apoyo. From there we continue to the pottery village of San Juan de Oriente and to the Finca San Pedro, where local products such as dragon fruit, citrus fruits, vanilla and many other types of exotic crops are cultivated. On a guided tour through this farm we learn a lot of interesting facts about the agricultural production of Nicaragua. At the end of the tour, we enjoy a snack of products grown on the farm.
In the afternoon we continue our journey along Lake Managua and the volcano chain to Leon. On the way, we can observe the green landscape turning slowly into a dry steppe landscape as we drive through the Corredor Seco.

Day 3 - Day 3: City tour León – visit of Flor de Caña rum distillery

The colonial town of León, the oldest university town in the country, is the cradle of the revolution and famous for its numerous poets and writers such as Rubén Darío. On our tour of the city we first visit the cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and from its roof we get a spectacular view over the city with the many churches. Our walk through the city continues to the Rúben Darío Museum, the art museum Gurdián-Ortiz and the Museum of Legends.
In the afternoon we drive to Chichigalpa, past the largest active volcano in the country, San Cristobal. There we visit the distillery of the famous Rum Flor de Caña, where the the sugar cane grown in the surroundings is processed. We get an insight into the rum production and can also taste it.

Day 4 - Day 4: León - Managua - Market of Masaya – Evening visit of Masaya Volcano – Granada

Before we get to know the capital, we visit the ruins of the original León, destroyed in 1610 by a volcanic eruption. León Viejo (also a World Heritage Site) was one of the earliest Spanish settlements in the Americas. Arriving in Managua, we will take a tour through the old and new city streets. Next, we visit Masaya's craft market, which offers a broad overview of the work of Nicaraguan artists. Towards evening we continue to the crater of the active volcano Masaya, whose lights from the lava in the crater con be observed particularly well in the darkening. After this detour we continue to Granada.

Day 5 - Day 5: City tour Granada with horse carriages and boats tour between the Las Isletas

In the morning, we will take a sightseeing tour of Granada's typical horse-drawn carriages. On the way we descend to visit the most important monuments of the city, including the old Franciscan monastery, the Clock Tower of the Church of La Merced, House of the Three Worlds and tobacco factory of Doña Elba. The coaches will bring us to the boat landing stage for our trip through the Isletas, a collection of islets of lava in Lake Nicaragua, where we will learn a lot about the fauna and flora of this unusual habitat. The rest of the day is at leisure.

Day 6 - Day 6: Mombacho Volcano and Café Las Flores coffee tour

Granada is located at the foot of the non-active volcano Mombacho, which we will visit today. From the park entrance, trucks adapted for tourist transportation take us the steep path up to the crater. From there we have a spectacular view of Granada and Lake Nicaragua. In the cloud forest reserve around the crater we take an instructive hike, learning about animals and plants of this special habitat. On the way back we make a stop at Hacienda Las Flores, where we can learn and appreciate the cultivation and processing of coffee. We return to Granada, where we will enjoy our farewell dinner at a leading restaurant of the city.
