Tour this regal city with your Local Guide. See the highlights, from the Royal Mile to fairytale Holyrood Palace. Visit imposing Edinburgh Castle, set high on a hill overlooking the city. Your afternoon and evening are free to continue discovering more of the city, shop or just relax. In August, during the grand Edinburgh Festival, tickets for the Military Tattoo are included. Heading north, stop at St. Andrews, whose Royal & Ancient Golf Club has given us the Rules of Golf. Call in at the village of Braemar, then take a break for photos at Craithie Church, which the Royal Family attends when they are in Scotland. Pass Balmoral Estate, the Queen’s private Highland residence, and drive through Royal Deeside before arriving in Aviemore, set in Cairngorms National Park. (Breakfast, Dinner)
Tour the beautiful Scottish Highlands today. Start with a visit to Cawdor Castle, famous for its associations with Shakespeare’s Macbeth, who was promised the Thanedom of Cawdor by the witches. Then to the battlefields of Culloden, where in 1746 the Jacobite cause, with Bonnie Prince Charlie’s leadership, perished. On to visit the Glen Ord Whisky Distillery, established in 1838 by the MacKenzie family. Then enjoy some free time in Inverness, the Highland’s capital, before returning to Aviemore. Traveling to the coast, pass Loch Ness, home to the mysterious monster “Nessie.” Then travel across by bridge to the scenic Isle of Skye. Take in views of the Cuillin Mountains, lochs and cliffs, and see traces of its prehistoric and medieval people. Visit the Clan Donald Visitor Centre to hear about the Lords of the Isles and 13 centuries of Clan history. Later, ferry back to the mainland. Pass Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain, and Fort William as you travel to your hotel in Ballachulish. (Breakfast, Dinner)
Admire Glencoe and Rannoch Moor before stopping at “bonnie” Loch Lomond. Take a cruise, enjoying the surrounding scenery. Then continue south to the lively city of Glasgow. (Breakfast)
